The science curriculum at Pinecrest Academy of Nevada follows the Next Generation Science Standards. From kindergarten through eighth grade, students learn about life science, earth science, space, and physical science. Throughout the course, they are also exposed to the engineering and technological applications for using science every day. Students keep a scientific notebook, learn about the scientific method, and participate in hands-on science projects and science labs.
The technology curriculum at Pinecrest Academy of Nevada is available to students in grades K-8, offering additional technology elective courses to students in grades 5-8. Beginning in kindergarten, our students have access to technology in the classroom; from tablets to desktops- students have daily hands-on experience with computers and next generation technology. Students in grades 5-8 are provided with Google Chromebooks- offering each student a personal school computer dedicated for use in the classroom and at home. The digital world is continuously changing and and we are preparing our students to embrace new and innovative technology with each step in the evolution of computer programming, digital media, and wireless communication.
Pinecrest Academy of Nevada offers an engineering program to all students in grades K-8. Elementary students attend a STEAM class once a week which provides them with an opportunity to experience engineering in ways they may not have imagined. From routine daily tasks to experimental bottle-rockets, the STEAM course teaches students about the importance of engineering in today’s society. Advances in technology, communication, and infrastructure would not be possible without the talents of the engineering community. Students in grades 6-8 are offered an additional elective option with our Robotics course- focusing on the development, production, and testing of student-created robots and basic machines.
The arts program is available to students in grades K-8 with students in grades K-5 attending an Art and Music class one day each week. The elementary Art course offers students an opportunity to work in a variety of mediums from watercolor paints to clay and yarn- providing our students with multiple outlets for creativity. Student work is often displayed in our hallways as an example of the unique perspective each student brings to an assigned project. Students in grades 6-8 are offered an optional Art elective in which they experiment with more advanced artistic mediums. For students interested in blending art and technology, middle school students may also enroll in a semester-long Graphic Design course.
Our K-5 Music class exposes students to a variety of musical genres and teaches them basic skills to create music of their own. Instruction takes place in many forms- from listening to music to hands-on opportunities with a variety of instruments- the music program allows children to experience music in different ways. Creativity and imagination are encouraged as students experiment with using different instruments or creating instruments of their own out of common household items. Students in grades 6-8 are offered electives in Strings, Orchestra, Choir and Drama.
The mathematics curriculum will be aligned with NCTM Principles and Nevada Academic Content Standards for Mathematics by grade level for grades K-8. Mathematics activities also include mental math, math stories, math games, and competitions. Students in grades 6-8 who excel in this area have an opportunity to enroll in advanced mathematics classes; Fuel Education courses are available for students seeking to earn high school credit (this is an optional, paid program).
